There are various purification processes available for seed oils, including degumming, neutralization, bleaching and deodorization at high temperatures. Each of these has their own set of advantages and disadvantages.
Each of these processes aims to produce a stable oil suitable for further processing, while simultaneously improving its integrity by eliminating unwanted components such as fatty acids or phosphatides.
Chemical refining processes are usually employed by refiners of specific oils in order to make sure it fits certain applications, for example in tropical seed oils, to reduce their phosphorous content in their final product.
One such process is known as degumming. This involves hydration of oil and subsequent separation of phospholipids (compounds that contain phosphorous). The purpose of this step is to produce more stable products.
Neutralization purification processes aim to remove free fatty acids and oxidation products from oil through an acid pretreatment step and subsequent bleaching step conducted at high temperatures.
These types of processes are regularly seen at commercial vegetable and fruit oilseed refining plants as well as by smaller edible oil producers in order to improve their oilseed’s nutritional properties.
Many processes are designed to produce oil that is both odorless and flavorless; such oils are known as “RBD”, or Refined Bleached Deodorized oils.
