Industrial seed oils such as canola, corn, cottonseed, peanut, safflower and sunflower oils–commonly referred to as vegetable oils–are among the most prevalent cooking oils found in American homes today. Unfortunately these toxic oils should be avoided at all costs for their potential hazards which include nutrient depletion, chronic diseases and environmental degradation.
Seed oils are relatively recent additions to the human diet, first becoming widely consumed during the late 1800s. Their rapid rise to popularity was driven by flawed research suggesting heart benefits as well as limited food safety regulations at that time.
Once harvested, seeds are heated at very high temperatures until their unsaturated fats oxidize, producing free radicals that damage cell membranes and disrupt hormones. Chemicals are then added to extract oil before further heating is conducted to form the finished product.
End result? A calorically dense, nutritionally-devoid oil without any health benefits. Furthermore, they cause further damage by encouraging excessive omega-6 consumption while attenuating omega-3 production – creating an undesirable domino effect in our bodies that encourages further harm by encouraging overeating of omega-6s versus producing sufficient amounts of omega-3s.
These highly processed cooking oils can be found almost everywhere, from packaged food and restaurants to health clubs and gyms, but the good news is that you can easily swap out for healthier and more nutritive oils like coconut, olive, or avocado oil instead.
Start eliminating seed oils from your diet by clearing out your pantry. Get rid of all those bottles of canola, corn, cottonseed, soybean, peanut, safflower or sunflower oils you have stashed there!
Consider reducing your intake of processed food products that contain unhealthy oils, restaurant meals that use industrial seed oils repeatedly heated during preparation, and any remaining industrial seed oils with natural, organic oils carefully sourced and processed by means of swapping them out with one of these.
