Memes like these focus on the idea that seed oils contain omega-6 fatty acids that may lead to inflammation and imbalanced hormone levels, having an adverse impact on health. Since most Americans consume around 80 percent of their fat calories through eating seed oils (about 80 percent), this could have serious ramifications on your well-being.
These claims, however, are often made without sufficient scientific basis or are founded upon incorrect assumptions. First and foremost, it’s essential to remember that most of our fat calories come from animal fats rather than seed oils; we typically get most of our dietary fat through saturated and monounsaturated sources, which are both actually good for us.
Furthermore, most seeds used to produce these oils are genetically modified and therefore pose health risks to human consumers. Furthermore, they are unstable and highly vulnerable to oxidation; an process where fats react with oxygen to form free radicals which have been known to damage cells and contribute to disease.
As they’re often refined, these oils contain additives and chemicals used in their production process that further reduce their nutritional value. Extracted using chemical processes and often bleached and deodorized prior to being sold on supermarket shelves. They have higher smoke points which makes them suitable for high heat cooking methods like frying. Their long shelf lives have made seed oils extremely popular among fast-food restaurants.
Seed oils are popular due to their affordability but offer few health benefits. Most significantly, they contain large quantities of Omega-6 polyunsaturated fats – which have anti-inflammatory effects – replacing more expensive traditional sources like lard and butter during anti-saturated fat campaigns of the early 20th century.

These oils foster a toxic, metabolically unhealthy environment in our bodies, encouraging fat storage while contributing to numerous other health issues, such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, autoimmune diseases, and IBS. Additionally, to being health risks, these oils are also prohibitively costly – up to 30 times more than their animal-derived counterpart tallow. Thus it comes as no surprise that vegans do not embrace them, despite them being used widely in most restaurant kitchens. As a result, vegans have taken to sharing memes on social media about the dangers associated with seed oil use, leading some people to abandon them altogether. But others still use them in cooking since some consider it better than nothing at all – as evidenced by TikTok user sa4543567360’s meme of lizard people laughing at people who put seed oils into their food, which garnered over 2 million likes within six weeks!

Nutrition advice on the internet and podcasts can often be misleading, with recent information suggesting that seed oils are dangerous toxins to one’s health. Commonly referred to as “The Hatful Eight,” this collection of cooking and salad oils composed of canola, corn, cottonseed, soy bean oil, sunflower seed oil, safflower oil, grape seed oil have been targeted by social media influencers as causing everything from heart disease to leaky gut syndrome.
Problematic oils — such as those refined and used in processed food because of their higher smoke points and longer shelf lives — typically contain high levels of omega-6 fats, which have been linked with inflammation and other ailments in humans. Due to this fact, some individuals prefer oils that contain higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids – like olive, avocado, or fish oil.
Another problem with these oils is that they are often produced using genetically modified plants treated with chemicals and then exposed to high temperatures, leading them to break down into unstable fatty acids that release free radicals into the body – potentially leading to cardiovascular diseases and cancers, among other issues.
Additionally, these oils are nutritionally deficient as they lack essential fatty acids like omega-3s, omega-9s, and vitamin E. Furthermore, they’re highly reactive and oxidize easily – easily turning rancid when exposed to heat or light.
Lastly, these oils have been linked with obesity as they promote overeating by interfering with the hypothalamus in the brain and disrupting levels of leptin (the hormone responsible for telling our bodies when to stop eating) within our systems. Hyperphagia – or excessive hunger – has been reported due to the consumption of these oils.
